Adar Poonawalla is an Indian businessman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Serum Institute of India. The company was founded by his father Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla (Vaccine King of India) in 1966 and it is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer as of 2017. After completing her graduating from the University of Westminster, London, Adar Poonawalla joined the Serum Institute of India in 2001 and become CEO in 2011.
He made the headlines when Serum Institute claimed that his institute is in partnership with the British company and will supply the COVID-19 vaccine to the world developed by Oxford University, England. He received many business and philanthropy awards from CNBC, CNN, Economic Times and Hurun.

Adar Poonawalla started his career after the completion of his graduate course. He joined his father’s Serum Institute in 2001 and especially concentrated on the company’s international market by exporting its products in nearly 35 countries across the globe.
He also worked on getting new products licensed and pre-qualified by the World Health Organization. He started supplying his company’s products to United Nations Agencies like UNICEF and PAHO.
After Adar joined the company, they started exporting their products to almost 140 countries and 85 percent of their total revenue is from overseas. Later on, he became the CEO of the Serum Institute with full control of the company’s day to day operations.

Adar Poonawalla made headlines many times in his career. In 2013, he made headlines after Forbes India named him as one of the “Four Scions to Watch Out For”, later that year he hosted Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall for a private visit at his Serum Institute’s manufacturing facility in India. In 2014, he and his father bid a whopping amount of 550 million Euros for the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
In 2014, Cyrus Poonawalla group had invested 100 Crore rupees for clean Pune initiative and the Clean City initiative was inaugurated at Serum Institute of India, Pune by former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis. He also added that 50 percent of the vaccine will be available for India and rest they will distribute in other GAVI countries. They also had partnered with American companies to manufacture COVID-19 vaccines and hope to announce it soon.
He also claimed that they had started the manufacturing process at their risk and once they get necessary regulatory approvals they will start manufacturing in huge volumes. They can manufacture around 300 million doses by the end of this year.
