Career

Subrata Roy started his career in the year 1976 as a businessman. He joined a company named Sahara Finance that ran a chit fund, but the company didn’t perform well and he took it over. After that in the year 1978, Subrata changed the company’s financial model and used the old model of the Peerless Group.
In the year 1990, Subrata shifter to Lucknow which later on became the base of his Sahara group. He launched his project Sahara City covering 217 self-sufficient townships in the later 90s. Since then the company has become a conglomerate of India with several ranges of businesses. Now the company has an interest in financial services, education, tourism, real estate, entertainment, healthcare, and hospitality.
In the year 1992, the company launched the Hindi newspaper Rashtriya Sahara and in the late 90s, it started the famous Aamby Valley Project near Pune, Maharashtra, India. In the year 2000, Sahara started a TV channel named Sahara TV which was renamed Sahara One. Sahara also started three weeklies titled Sahara Time, Sahara Samay, and Sahara Alami in different languages in the year 2003.

In the years 2010 and 2012 Sahara owned the iconic Grosvenor House Hotel in London and also the historic Plaza Hotel and Dream Down Town Hotel in New York City. In the year 2004, it was estimated that Sahara has a workforce of around 1.4 million and has 29.6 million investors and depositors.
Apart from his business ideology, the Sahara group also contributed to the relief of the society during various natural calamities. In the year 2013, during the floods in Uttarakhand Sahara has distributed bottles of drinking water, packaged juice, food packets, candles, and matchboxes to the affected people. They also provided 25 medical health units with doctors and free medicines and also contributed to the rehabilitation program by providing 10000 pre-fabricated houses.
They also provide financial support to the families of 127 martyrs who sacrifice their lives during the Kargil War. The Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee praised the Sahara Group for their incredible work.
Subrata Roy has also given lectures at the Harvard University, Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Management, Banaras Hindu University, and many other prestigious institutions on the corporate philosophy of Collective Materialism. He has also written books like Shanti Sukh Santushti, Maan Samman Atmasamman, Life Mantras, and Think With Me.
Awards

Subrata Roy has received various awards and honors throughout his career. He has won an honorary doctorate in business leadership from the University of East London in the year 2013. He has also won the Business Icon of the Year award at the Power brands Hall of Fame Awards in London in the year 2011.
In the year 2007, he received the ITA TV Icon of the Year and received the Global Leadership Award in the year 2004. Apart from these, he has won many prestigious awards like Businessman of the Year, Best Industrialist Award, Vocational Award for Excellence, National Citizen Award, Indian Television Academy Award, and many more other awards.
He has also been rewarded with the honorary degree of D. Litt by Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga. He was also listed among the 50 most powerful people in India since 2003, In the year 2012, he was also listed among the 10 most influential businessman in India and termed as the second largest employer in India by Time Magazine.
Controversy

Subrata Roy was involved in a controversy when the Supreme Court of India ordered the detention of him on 26 February 2014. He was failed to appear before the court in connection with a legal dispute with Market Regulator SEBI.

After the trial his lawyer stated that Subrata’s mother was in poor health condition and needed him by his side, so he failed to appear before the court. After this incident, Subrata was held in custody in the Tihar Jail and was on parole since 2016.
He has given bail several times on different grounds and he still had to pay 10,621 crore rupees to meet his liabilities. Roy has sold many of his properties to raise the money but recently he claims that the company’s fundamentals are intact and assets are greater than the liabilities.
He also claimed that he has deposited over 20,000 crore rupees and has already repaid to 95% of his company’s investors. Recently Subrata Roy along with his wife and children have acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Macedonia, Central Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe, and no longer Indian citizens.
